10 Features to Consider for Any ERP Solution

Introduction

If deployed correctly, ERP (enterprise resource planning) technology can deliver enormous benefits from streamlining workflows to improving customer service. But that’s not all. The right solution can also boost productivity levels while delivering real-time visibility into sales patterns, merchandise availability and cash flow.

However, there is a downside to this robust technology. With its layers of configuration and complex interfaces, ERP can require years to implement, carry a seven-figure price tag and significantly impact a company’s staff and work practices.

Considerations

To render ERP a worthy investment, companies should search for solutions that possess a series of key features and capabilities. These include:

1. Mobile functionality: Studies suggest that enterprise mobile workers will make up 73 percent of the workforce by 2012. That’s all the more reason to select an ERP solution that provides remote access to its database and processes. In fact, an ERP system with mobile functionality lets workers access a software program that allows a mobile device, from a Tablet PC to an iPhone, connect to the ERP system. By granting remote access, companies can ensure their employees have up-to-the-minute information on everything from product pricing to transportation services.

2. Manufacturing: It’s not the trendiest application of ERP technology but it’s one of the most important: manufacturing. By helping companies align their manufacturing and inventory processes, an ERP manufacturing module delivers number benefits, including:

 

  • Cost reductions through efficient inventory management
  • Detailed reports on business-critical inventory information
  • Streamline the production process with established goals
  • Accelerate production cycles

Just be sure your company has the in-house expertise needed to manage and monitor an open source ERP system.

9. Third-party interoperability: Almost all businesses need to extend or bolt on additional systems to satisfy unique aspects of their business that are not addressed by their ERP system. For example, a financial institution may rely on a particular ERP solution for its accounting activities but turn to a third-party application to process human resources claims. For this reason, companies should inquire about a particular ERP system’s degree of interoperability to avoid integration headaches.

10. Ease of integration: Whether you’re migrating legacy data into a new ERP system or adding a third-party application to an existing one, there’s no denying the integration issues that accompany many ERP deployments. It’s a necessary evil as ERP modules, from HR to manufacturing, must be tightly integrated with all other business-critical applications, including office productivity suites, in order to deliver real business value. For some, that may entail concealing an ERP system behind front-office applications to drive adoption among employees. In the end though, an ERP system must be both pervasive and invisible to be effective.

Conclusion

Deploying a robust ERP system can be a daunting undertaking from both an IT and financial perspective. Customization to suit your company’s particular processes can further complicate matters, and there’s no telling how eagerly employees will embrace a system that wreaks havoc on age-old business practices. But with the right features and functionalities at hand, and a carefully crafted implementation plan, an ERP system can deliver benefits worthy of the investment.

Great article!

I agree with all of the areas noted but would add a few more:
- Fulfillment: Hand-in-hand with inventory, an ERP system should be able to automate the shipping and fulfillment processes, provide customers with self-service access in to their order status, and talk back to its order management, customer service, marketing, and sales force automation systems so that reps have instant access to the order and fulfillment status at all times.
- Ecommerce: If you have a retail or ecommerce channel, its particularly useful for your web site, web store, and online forms to run out of the same system. This automates the process from placement of orders from the web store to processing the order and shipping it out the door, populates your inventory, customer service, and accounting systems, speeds time to ship the product to the customer, while significantly reducing the data entry needed for this process so the business can more efficiently scale. There are other advantages to doing this including providing real-time closed-loop marketing ROI (real revenue) reports by lead source.
- PSA: If you are a services business, its abolsutely critical to your your professional services automation, resources management, and project billing systems integrated with your CRM and accounting processes. Data by SPI Research shows a clear improvement in margins for services companies with integrated PSA, CRM, and Accounting packages.

Of course, all of these depend on your business. If you are not a heavy manufacturing company, there is really no use in having a strong manufacturing process management system.

I really appreciate this great review! I agree with Rob, modularity, and being able to adopt the functions needed for your business are paramount.

I would also add some consideration for data warehousing/BI and simple report writing tools so that data input can be extracted for improved decision making when its needed most.
