One of the first things a good project manager does is establish and communicate a set of standards for the team. Every person that reports to you must get a written set of your expectations of their duties. It is also important that your team members know how their performance is important to the successful completion of the project at hand.
FOCUS BRIEF
Management has various styles and formats. But in the end, it is the ability of the manager to deliver a good quality product/ service in the stipulated time. Micromanagement is definitely not the way to get there. What is required to succeed is a clear policy and process for conducting the task at hand and ensuring that it is properly executed. Proper execution is the most important of the tasks at hand and there are certain steps to ensure that you get the product you want.
It is not enough to make employees aware of their duties. To ensure that commitments are met, you must conduct regular performance evaluations. This is the area that differentiates a good project manager from the run-of-the-mill variety. To ensure that your team doesn’t lose sight of the goal, evaluation is a must, even if you are pressed for time.
Finally, reward good performance and ensure that you draw attention to areas that need improvement. Even the best of employees can function better if they have regular guidance. Feedback and recognition are the two most important parameters that every employee relies on to get to the next level. You must ensure that you give your team enough of both.
However, your job doesn’t end with giving feedback. You must ensure that your team members act upon your advice and improve their performance in weak areas. For this, it is important to set a timeline within which they must display improvement.
