I actually found this missing the fundamental distinction I am looking for. Perhaps I'll pose a separate question outside of this conversation but I'm specifically looking for the distinctions between online marketing, digital marketing, interactive marketing, inbound marketing and social marketing. Clearly there's overlap and perhaps even substitution/interchange between these terms. Yet, if all are still being distinctly used I'd appreciate a distinction of what simplistically each refers to. Thanks.

Very well written with very insightful information. However, I don't agree with your first sentence that 'online marketing or internet marketing is relatively new'. I was doing internet marketing through portal partners in 1998; 13 years ago. Today we would call that SEO or SEM but in 1998 those terms were not yet 'invented'.
