What a wonderful Leaning opportunity. 97% "muda" (waste). In a typical "leaning" you seek the seven forms of muda.
Transport
Inventory
Motion
Waiting
Overproduction
Over Processing
Defects

Some of these muda certainly apply to email but I think new muda are introduced when we consider email waste.

Expanding on this I think business email muda could read as follows:

Over production - mail expediting a response to earlier mail
Over processing - comment to a message that adds no useful information
Defects - mail to wrong person, exceeds capacity limit, failed delivery
Spam - mail offering something not needed or requested
Why me? - copied on a mail without good reason
Water coolers - not business related
Horn Blowers - mail uninteresting announcements

Do you agree with these muda? Do you have additional muda?

Next step how to combat and eliminate - look at "Leaning" actions
