Open Source Open World

Open source is a concept of free sharing of technical information that has been around for much longer than most of us would imagine. When we think of open source today, we usually think of software. As wonderful and widely used as open source software is, according to Linus Torvalds, "the future is open source everything." From foods and beverages to scientific and health research studies and advanced technological innovations, the world has turned to open source.

A shame the bar graph doesn't include 2010 and Oracle's purchase of Sun and, therefore, MySQL...otherwise an excellent resource -- not that I'm biased or anything... :-D

I am surprised the old bulletin boards systems are not in here.

We were sharing code across a network long before the internet had been started and/or linux for that matter.

I would venture to say it was the first open source situations shared by a group of people trying to achieve a common goal.

TOTALLY agree with marty!
There is a major window missed there. BBS's were a life line pre networked days.

But yes an amazing job on open source! Thank You.

Well Symbian share from 2008 is now totally irrelevant in 2010, since the iPhone OS has successfully overtaken the market... So, no more bragging about Symbian :)))

That SpringSource acquisition is an amazing exit, particularly for all of the Covalent and Hyperic folks who stuck it out and were brought back together under the SpringSource brand.

Very interesting idea. I wish the politicians would learn a thing or two from you.

You may want to color Google Chrome green too (along side of Firefox) since it's Opensource also!

Looks nice... too bad nobody can update it or change it because it's an Image and you didn't include the source! Jerk!

Ok, thanks! Really good job!

But as sushilshik has asked, what license this poster published under? Will you publish the source or high resolution version that one could print in paper at least?

Hahaha!

Чуваков с ЛОРа даже тут ни с кем не спутаешь! Сам на ЛОРе не сижу, но иногда читаю. Угараю просто над вами!

In topic: Great job, but with some discrepancies.

Great work. It really makes me think. I did a note in chinese here (link: http://wavebehind.org/2010/02/open-source-open-world.html) .

Great job indeed. As noted, missing the BBs of the 80s ... and really should be powered by the underlying data which would allow it to evolve forward as a dynamic reference. Always an option for the future ...

Really cool!!
Damn linux is finally being adopted by people.....great to see this!!
Should encourage the use of open source software instead of cracked software!!

What does it mean when Open Source products can be purchased? Sun with MySQL, Oracle with Sun ...
When Enterprises (and individuals) invest (time, processes, learning, procedures) into the adoption of technology they need to know who stands committed behind it, to improve its performance and innovate. If Oracle gains by silencing it's open source purchases to better promote their proprietary products then they will. Or even worse, if they slow down Open Source development to advance their products.

Fantastic. Ultimate message is freedom for everybody to live with their differential potentials evolved through the continuous evolution with respect and look forward for growth. This is one world, one human feeling to live with dignity. Hatred and destruction will vanish the moment when one realize that only religion of refinement and coexistance through love for human dignity.

What is really needed is a website that provides open source design guidelines for EVERYTHING, i.e. from cars, to tin-openers to easy open jars, to wheelchair access to software.

All these things above are separate... no good. I see designers repeating the same mistakes over and over again. e.g. I have a CD player that when selecting tracks doesn't wrap back round to track '1' when on the last track etc (this is a good design principle, but only obvious in some circumstances).

If there was an open source design guidelines for everything, then designers could check what the people actually wanted. What this would mean would be:
1) Happier customers due to better products.
2) Happier designers

One downside that people may think is that competition would be slaughtered... however this is not the case as the real entrepreneurial people out there are the ones that make ideas happen not just come up with the ideas, so business people could still do well.

Everyone is a winner with this idea.

I like the spectrum of industries this shows. Patents are indeed holding us back from advancing in many of these industries. Not that they shouldn't exist, but they should expire much sooner.
