NW Arkansas has these little three companies among others:
1) Wal-mart
2) Tyson
3) J.B. Hunt
Has anyone heard of them?

Ranking the Cities is misleading. A large municipality like Houston (approx. 640 sq. mi.) cannot be compared to even a municipality as economically and geographically similar as Dallas (approx. 380 sq. mi.).
The only fair comparison is between metropolitan areas, which allows suburbs to be taken into account. Do this, and the ratio Fortune 500 companies per capita begins to appear far more geographically balanced.
Texas still kicks ass, though, there's no getting around that.

More than the metric on states where the company is headquartered is another important metric.
What portion of the company's revenue comes from the state of the HQ and how much from other states and/or countries around the world. In other words where does the revenue come from, which makes them a F500 company?
