The Real Cost of Social Media

Many companies may be fooled by the free cost to open a social media account, failing to consider the expenses that go into running a social media campaign. What is the real cost of social media? Do the benefits really outweigh the costs?

Looks like the math on the twitter value is off or the mis-labeled. The chart should show a negative ROI. And with lead generation being tenth, it seems that there should be more emphasis on sales than less.

I think you've got an error on this graphic. Are you really saying a monthly investment of $2382 will bring a return of $1667 which nets a positive ROI of 43%?

Seems like a negative to me, but I assume someone just got the labels backwards.

Hey Focus, on second thought, this really needs more work.
- Case Studies: I can't believe that Danny Brown of Bonsai Interactive is suggesting that the investments into Social Media for the acclaimed Old Spice campaign would be anywhere near $210,600. And if you're talking about ROI, why not mention the incremental revenue Old Spice got out of that campaign - 107% rise in sales, according to this video:

- Facebook: The reason why somebody becomes a fan in the first place, is because they like the brand. And that's why they spend more money on buying it. Not because they're FB fans. You're thinking the wrong way around.
- The Twitter ROI is a joke - that's probably why there is no detail behind it.

I think this study misses the point that if someone has gone out of their way to Like you on facebook, they are already a loyal customer and so of course are more likely to spend more money with you. I don't think you are going to get more traction from those who aren't already fans of your brand simply by having them Like your page. Unless you hit them with some really special offers of course.

Great infographic - nicely aligned with my blog post of last week. Marketers should stop worrying about the ROI of Social Media, and start understanding the impact of a social-centered comms strategy vs traditional campaign tactics. Read more here: http://ow.ly/4WTrJ
