Good or Evil: Have We Shared Too Much With Facebook, Google, and Apple?

All over the news there are reports of 'the internet' jeopardizing privacy and serving as a means of connecting the vulnerable to all manner of predation, and always there are suggested ways to keep confidential information behind closed doors... but who exactly does society trust to keep these doors closed, and how safe can an individual be if the keys are sold to the highest bidder? What stands in the way of Google, Apple, Facebook or any other company charged with keeping consumer privacy confidential from selling it without a second glance? Nothing, and the information they sell is quite alarming. It seems harmless enough to search Google for a favorite band or log into Facebook to connect with friends, and most would think nothing of it. But major corporations like Google or Apple think much differently; they see it as the perfect opportunity to cash in. With the ability to strip mine users computers of past searches and other information, these companies can create a catalog of personalized information ready to sell to the next advertiser or to use against their own customers to guide and control their content usage. The reality is terrifying, and that's just the start.

i think that most people (somewhat intelligent people) already know this

i mean, when you're getting ad's on your page that say " Hey (insert your name) from (insert your town), I heard that (insert your gf's name) is unsatisfied, try our new penis enhancement pills"...

pretty obvious they are jacking our info

I guess so. More and more crimes are now existing in our community because we share too much information on the Internet through social networking sites. Criminals are now taking advantage of the information that we share on our social networking accounts - making them more successful on the bad things that they're doing. *sob*

FYI, Apple made this infographic incorrect just a few days ago. We can now use 3rd party tools again.

And do you really think HTML is going to replace Flash just because Papa Jobs said so? Just like he said nobody would use Java anymore.

Great information otherwise. Don't want to share info, don't use the internet.

This infographic is little more than fear-mongering based on old information that is no longer accurate. Facebook has already updated their privacy policy and have made changes to the user control of apps. This is old news. Not to mention if you moderate the content you put on Facebook it shouldn't be a big deal anyway.

I quote from above, "Google has been embroiled in recent controversy [...]" over net neutrality and Verizon wireless. There was no controversy here at all. It was much to do about nothing. Instead it was bloggers everywhere immediately getting inflamed before having all the facts. Now we know Verizon and Google are offering legislation to give the FCC the power to enforce ISPs and net neutrality. As both companies stated they were disgusted by the case where I think it was Comcast was let off the hook because the judge ruled the FCC does not have jurisdiction on the Internet.

The complaints lodged against apple might be the only legit ones, but evidence for the conspiracy that apple is doing something sinister with our data is pretty slim. Furthermore, if apple want to phase out flash because they think it sucks and gives hackers an open door (all of which I would agree with) then they can do so. Do I agree with their ability to control the Internet experience of users, no. But in the case of flash I think it makes sense. So on a case by case basis I plan to look at what apple does and not make a broad blanket statement about content distribution concerns.
