The Tablet Takeover
Market data suggests that the Apple iPad has led to a new ultra-mobile device marketing that is poised to make inroads against laptop, netbook and even desktop computer sales. As computer manufacturers launch new tablet devices to compete with the iPad, the market is expected to experience accelerating growth over the next several years as it slowly grows to accept tablet devices other than the iPad.
According to available data, more than one-tenth of shoppers online are planning to purchase a tablet within the next half-year, suggesting that as many as 28 million of the devices could be sold in the coming five months, numbers suggest that demand could outpace supply.
Tablets will dramatically effect the dynamics of the computer market beyond the types of computing devices sold. Touchscreens on tablets eliminate the need for the mouse while the games sold for the mobile devices are eating into sales of portable mini gaming systems.
Studies also show that obstacles must be overcome by tablet manufactures if the devices will truly replace today’s personal computers. For example, users often need external keyboards to be productive with a tablet and their processors still seem to lack power to provide for adequate application multitasking.

would love to know your source that says Apple ranks 4th in tablet sales worldwide and the sales #'s and co.'s of the top 3 sellers of tablets.
Tablets will not take the place of the laptop... I have a 3g ipad that I thought would be the greatest thing, but I rarely use it. My macbook pro is much easier and faster to use.
I will have to agree with dax312. Although tablets are great in definition, the usability of an actual laptop far exceeds any other tablet. If you are interested in the portability, size and weight of a tablet, but actually want a usable device, it might be in your best interest to try a MacBook Air out instead of the iPad.
I also question the statement tablets will take the place of laptops - this is not what I am seeing from other research firms. Although people are likely to move away from bulky desktops, they will likely replace with a laptop and have a tablet as a secondary portable unit.
I don't think tablets will replace laptops, but they will certainly supplement them for niche applications: Inventory control, medical info, basically anything where a clipboard and paper is still used now (even though we have laptops). I also think the technologies being developed will be put to use in other fields and devices. Artists and designers could use huge touch screens for example.
Tablets are good for a lot of things, and the emergence of tablets will open up new possibilities and new ways of using IT. But there are other areas where tablets cannot compete with a normal laptop.
E.g. the article mentions that users need an external keyboard - hey, if you need a keyboard to do what you want to do, maybe you should get a device with a keyboard! It's less cool (a macbook only marginally) but the tool should fit the task, not vice versa.
I completely believe tablets will replace laptops. tablets will evolve in such a way that it will multitask even better than a laptop can given the right OS and hardware. If you need a keyboard, they can be paired up with a bluetooth keyboard with no issues.
Just because a tablet has no usb or optical drive doesn't mean it will be held back from outpacing a clunky laptop. In the near future, laptops will be look at as old technology.
I remember when people said "smart phones will never take over the cell phone market due to how complex it is" and yet look around at how many people run around with iphones and androids.
Interesting! Fujitsu has had a assimilation of laptop and tablet for years...way before an iPad was ever thought of...and; guess what, that type of device IS the ultimate and truly incorporates the laptop...and the iPad...all-in-one...without skipping a beat.
In less time than we can imagine the tablets will improve and what we see today in tablets will be far outdone. If you can only imagine a tablet as what you see today you are already behind the curve.
yeah that's true that tablets will make their own market and this process it will also replace laptops/computers to some extent. but not on that much large scale !!
I doubt tablets will replace laptops, their markets are different enough that they compliment each other more than compete. Both products will advance drastically in the next few years and I imagine it will become far more efficient to have both.
wouldn't those changes just make the tablet a ultraportable notebook with a touchscreen?
