Big demand for big data solutions

  • Recommended by:

Over the last year or so,I have noted that there is strong growth momentum in areas supporting big data.Big data is a term applied to data sets whose size is beyond the ability of commonly used software tools to capture, manage, and process within a tolerable timeframe. There is buzz surrounding cloud computing, people often forget that behind these virtualized computing services is the storage infrastructure required to run them

As I recently told one of my greatest friends who happens to be one of the most prominent researchers in Africa Mr.Harun Makandi, the IT industry now operates within a deproductised environment, centred on a more services-driven approach. In one of the recent reports about Data uptake, the world’s data is doubling every two years and forecasts that 1.8 zettabytes will be created and replicated in 2011. The volume of data equates to over 200 billion high definition movies, each two hours in length.

Another notable finding in the study is that while individuals generate 75.80% of the information in the digital space, enterprises have some liability for 82% of said information at some point in its digital life, putting additional pressure on enterprises to fully secure and effectively manage their digital assets. This past week,I shared with my work mates how the future growth for high-end data storage solutions and management will come from four main sectors. They are Government, oil and gas, digital animation and content, financial services and business analytics.

Another emerging area for big data solutions is the field of electronic surveillance, which now incorporates predictive analysis.I also highlighted another upcoming trend, which will see Internet service providers enhancing their service offerings via the value-added service of cloud storage and backup as a means of differentiation from their competitors.Being in the industry of technology for close to a decade now, there is no doubt in my mind that the current challenge for enterprises is how to manage, use and analyze this huge mass of unstructured data that is being generated and their only solution is to establish a single virtualized storage environment which is both cost effective and scalable.
