Can you suggest a Project Status Management Tool?

If you seek a stand alone solution, you may want to consider MS Project (http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/project/FX100487771033.aspx). While it may have its detractors, it is nevertheless a competent Project Management tool that has stood the test of time.

Which spyware removal tool would you recommend to the non-techie?

Malwarebytes (Malwarebytes.org) is a safe bet.
I'm also partial to Ad-Aware (www.lavasoft.com) which has been mentioned before. It's the pioneer in this segment of software and still a terrific product.
