Dave Summers was an Indentured Apprentice in the National Coal Board in 1962, before going to the University of Leeds where he obtained a B.Sc. in Mining Engineering in 1965, and a PhD in 1968, his dissertation dealing with the technology of high-pressure waterjet cutting of rock.
He joined the then University of Missouri-Rolla (now MO S&T) in 1968, and was named a Curators' Professor of the University in 1980. His work on the applications of high-pressure waterjets over a range of applications, including, inter alia, the development of rock drills and mining machines has been internationally recognized. He helped form the Waterjet Technology Association and served as Board member until 2009, when he retired. He had served as both President and Board Chairman of that professional society. He directed the Rock Mechanics and Explosives Research Center at MO S&T for a total of 20 years.
He was a co-founder of the Energy blog, The Oil Drum, and still writes for that site, although in more recent years he has his own site, at Bit Tooth Energy. Since his retirement from the University last year he has continued to write on energy related issues, and to assist in technologies which show promise of helping provide answers to the energy questions in our future.
