How do you decide where to publish your content - your blog vs. 3rd party sites?

Why not both?
The most important thing to do is to get it "out there."
In other words, get in the habit of creating content.
If it's quicker to post to you blog, then do it there.
If a 3rd party site is quicker, do it there.
