I also know a lot about email marketing, having spent four years at SendLabs, an email marketing company that was purchased by Dyn in December 2010.

The biggest mistake? Not testing at all. I've seen too many just skip past this and end up wondering why they made mistakes and why they underperformed. It's too powerful an asset not to use, especially when it comes to split tests. more

What would you rather have 10,000 likes on Facebook or 10,000 email address?

10k opted-in email addresses any day of the week. Your resources for segmentation and targeted are far too strong to not have this as a primary marketing vehicle. 10k Facebook likes are nice but you can't target like you can with email. more

I agree with Lee above. Note that the mindset shouldn't be "dealing" with intelligent inboxes. If you're sending out great information that your subscribers want to engage with (opens, clicks, etc), then you simply need to keep doing what you're doing.
