How easy is it to burst hundreds of new instances?

Waiting for Amazon to greenlight your request to have more than 20 simultaneous instances is the biggest bottleneck. If you don't have a customer rep then it can take several days.

What are the advantages of buying cloud infrastructure directly rather than indirectly through companies like AppFog, PiCloud, SimpleWorker, etc?

If performance and uptime are part of your competitive advantage you probably don't want to outsource them to any PaaS.
You may also be running legacy apps that require you to 'throw hardware' at your problem which a PaaS may struggle to support. more

We currently support Rackspace Cloud. Some of us are actually in San Antonio right now, working on support for the rest of Rackspace's hosted services and we expect to have full support released in the next few weeks. more

How are people tracking S3 usage (cost) live via an API?

https://www.cloudability.com has an API you can use to pull down your costs. It provides a breakdown by service and other dimensions. As far as we know it's the only way to access cost & usage data for AWS, Rackspace, Heroku, etc. via API. more

Are you satisfied with the ROI you've received on your current Cloud Computing services?

Talking to our customers about investing in cloud services we find:
(1) They are generally satisfied, but we'd expect that: unlike traditional IT investments you can more easily switch off if you don't like what you're getting.

If you think Amazon is trying to compete against Zynga directly, maybe it is too late or just harder.
I assumed Amazon is doing social games to run on their rumored iPad competitor. That would be a completely different market to compete in. more
