How does the principle of "social proof" contribute to up and down votes on social networks?

Very few people are brave enough to be the first ones, they want something "vetted" or approved by others before they climb on board. Getting those "likes" and large followings (though often quite meaningless) indicates social proof, better explained as social acceptance.
