Hi Laura,
I can't speak too well to crowdfunding, but I'm sure you're familiar with KickStarter, IndiGoGo and the like.
As for crowdsourcing, the best way to gather information is to 'challenge' the public to compete in a way that addresses your mission rather than simply 'asking' them for opinions. Essentially, "task, don't ask", and issue prizes or incentives. My company, ChallengePost, manages public competitions for organizations as diverse as The World Bank, Samsung, The Cities of New York and San Diego, and Michelle Obama's "Let's Move" campaign, and everyone is always shocked with how much more innovation and ideas they get through issuing meaningful public competitions rather than simply asking for help or opinions.
