I have used the Payroll service offered by Bank of America that integrates with Quickbooks and found it to be quite effective and inexpensive. Even with several hourly employees, the manual effort is pretty minimal. Check with your bank to see what they have to offer and if it integrates with your accounting software. But the choice really depends upon how many employees you have to process and whether it makes sense to outsource to a PEO or to a service like Paychex or ADP who can then integrate with your accounting system. Hope this helps.
Awesome! Thank you so much John. I will get in touch with my bank...less manual effort sounds great.
In the past at a small employer I implemented and used PenSoft and found it to be very user-friendly and cost effective. I especially liked the customizable report function. Today, working in much larger companies we use PeopleSoft for our HRIS, and I find that the reporting function from PenSoft was actually much better for easy extraction of the data that I use on a daily basis even today.
FYI, re John Koch's comment - the Bank of America payroll that integrates Quickbooks used to be called PayCycle and is now owned by Intuit (the same as Intuit- http://payroll.intuit.com/).

One caveat to the "do-it-yourselfers" when it comes to payroll. It may seem cheap at the time, but you must compute your labor costs into the overall cost of running payroll. Not just weekly, but the quarterly and year-end reporting that needs to be done as well. Not to mention the risk of errors and omissions and lack of expertise in labor law that could end up costing you more in fines from your State Dept. of Whatever Labor Law. I would consider using PEO, so you get the payroll done for free and access to a full benefits package and full HR compliance. www.hroplus.com
