Rule #1 - Show 'value'.

Just like people pick stocks, jobs, cars, furniture, the typo question is what will this do for me NOW that will support, help, or otherwise make life easier for me down the road.

If someone thinks that you are happy where you are what is THIER benefit in moving you upwards? Unless they have someone that wants to have YOU'RE job they have to hire and train someone to replace you. That adds to the fact that they are probably going to have to pay you more in your new position as well. Where is the value in that? You have to tell/show them.

DO:

- Show that you can add value in the new position in very specific ways.

- Show that you have talents that could benefit them in the new position.

- Show interest in being challenged by the new opportunities it will offer.

DO NOT:

- Blast the person that may already be in the position that you want.

- Attest that you know it all for the new position and have nothing to learn there.

- Make it look like you intend to (quickly) use that new position as a stepping stone towards a new move shortly.

Bottom line: Just like buying a car, a refrigerator, or a new IT system, the key is to show value (features and benefits) of moving you up.
