Are blade servers more green IT than traditional rack servers?

I understand that they reduce physical space and energy, but why else would one choose to purchase blade servers versus traditional rack servers? How do they compare in cost and maintenance? Are blade servers the best option for a small company moving forward? We might be upgrading in our small company and I'm trying to get some feedback and research before approaching my team. Any thoughts on the subject would be greatly appreciated.

Blade servers are more "green" than a traditional server for a few reasons. They are built with power efficiency and improved cooling in mind. Also within a racked environment if the organization is growing and space is limited blades help vastly increase server space within the environment by offering 40-60% increase in the server density capabilities within a rack.

Looking at power consumption as an example I will use an IBM blade center because that is were my experience is.

In a 9U chassis you can have have upto 14 blades operating and not drawing more than 3000 watts at a given time. Where is you were to have that many physical 2U servers you would draw in the area of about 15000-2000 watts, not to mention having the expensive and power to cool those systems, and the server room itself.

So looking at it from a bigger picture perspective, blades are the way to go to save money not only when managing rack space.

As far as maintenance goes it does cost about the same because the systems do need to be maintained and various vendors do have their own maintenance packages for the solutions they sell.

I hope that helps, If you have any questions or need other details feel free to reach out.
