Remote desktop refers to the proprietary protocol developed by Microsoft abbreviated RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol). This allows a user to access a desktop from another system but does not allow for the local KVM (Keyboard, Video, and Mouse) to function simultaneously. This is typically provided for the user of the system to access applications and data remotely. Remote Assistance is similar in that it allows for remote access to another computer however it allows the local KVM and the remote KVM to share control of the system. This is useful in situation were you need to provide remote desktop support for training or troubleshooting. In addition to the Windows Remote Assistance services such as WebEx and GotoAssist provide additional features and flexibility.
