Aside from hard skills like content creation, what are the most important soft skills effective Community Managers possess? Patience? Humour? Empathy?

Perseverance and clarity of purpose. Flexibility. It takes a long time to build a community. Furthermore, the community you serve may not be the same community, or have the same needs, as you thought when you started.

Patience, humor, and empathy - yes, yes, and yes.

A successful community manager must also have the grace of a world-class hostess, the tact of an international negotiator, and the listening skills of a top-notch psychiatrist.

She must be able to spot trends in topics, conversations, and opinions and find ways to use those to improve the community. She must be nearly clairvoyant in being able to anticipate the interests and needs of her audience. She must be able to draw people into the conversations. She must be able to adapt the content and tone to meet the ever-changing needs of the community members.

Above all, she must be an advocate for the members of the community, not the brand. Her primary purpose should be about building relationships, not generating leads. The one will ultimately lead to the other if it's done right.

Ditto to you Jamie! You hit the nail with the hammer on your first try!! I absolutely agree with all that you have said here. I have many success stories based on the fact that I feel compelled to build a relationship with any of my future prospects. Empathy & Humor are my 2 favorite apps, however; Sincerity, Loyalty, and Trust should all be implemented while doing so. Moreover, know the difference as when to apply!! We are all people with human traits, and by paying close attention to personalities rather than principles with anyone, personally and professionally - is a vital key. In a nutshell, Respect and Boundaries are a must. Great topic and great answers here. Luv it! Ju

Thanks, Juliette. I love your additions of "Sincerity" which will help you nurture "Loyalty" and "Trust." Well-noted.

Completely agree also that "Respect & Boundaries" are critical elements of a "safe" community environment. I'd add that it's important to clearly identify those boundaries and what constitutes respect among community members - another key role of the community manager.

:)

Thanks Jamie! I am sure we could go round and round regarding this issue. :D Some seem to forget what is truly important in any relationship. Compassion being amongst them all, more importantly for self. It took me many years of heart ache for me,(personally & professionally) not knowing or realizing the difference between the two. Once the revelation became real was the day I began a new way of communicating. I truly believe no matter how much college or higher education one may have, without real compassion towards self as well as toward others; one will continue to be stagnant in ALL ASPECTS OF THEIR LIFE. Heck, each day for me is another day to be open-minded toward another persons wants & needs. Getting out of self is ultimately the only way to see INTO feelings, thoughts, ambitions, & goals of the recipient.... This is where self compassion comes to play. Literally, how can I keep what I have if am unwilling to listen INTO another. In a nutshell; A Self-less attitude is vital! When we express ourselves accordingly, this is without a doubt showing "gut-wrenching" honesty. This quality pours out onto another and is very apparent by the receiver. Once that quality is evident, the rest is history.
Truth shows Trust. Sincerity & Compassion show Loyalty etc....
The greatest thing'; Anyone can do this by listening intensely and self-less-ly
to the needs of another. This will become apparent ONLY if one is willing to look beyond the surface. (*~*) ~Can't go wrong when you follow your highest sense of right. ((hugs)) Juliette

Lots to "chew" on there, Juliette! :)
Here's to integrating your "highest sense of right" into business as well as personal endeavors.

I think intuition is also an important skill. By this I mean the ability to read situations and then respond accordingly. Empathy is one aspect of this, but it is also an innate understanding of human behaviour.
