Besides LinkedIn, what other social media platforms should salespeople use for prospecting?

Where are your customers? Where do they hang out? Likely candidates include the big guys like Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn. But most categories have niche sites that also have value - vertical community groups, association discussion boards, etc.

Your goal as a seller is to identify these places and then become a trusted member of that customer community. Join their networks, share best practices, be a resource for ideas, referrals, recommendations.

But I'm betting that you'll find an obscure network out there without a ton of traffic but that's highly relevant to your business and your customer.

What you are going to see in coming years is a big push away from more generalized social networks (i.e. Facebook and LinkedIn), and movement towards more niche platforms for a targeted audience (i.e. Focus.com (duh) for small business and sites like SpiceWorks.com for IT). As more of these 'focused' (couldn't help it) networks arise and existing sites evolve to become more like social networks (followers, discussion groups, etc), you'd be wise to find the dominant platform in your specific industry and create a strong 'virtual identity' within the space as an early-adopting expert that contributes meaningfully and often.

Basically, find one super-relevant and dig in deep rather than casting a wide net trying to be all things to all people.

Full disclosure: I'm betting on this trend by setting up the first social network for real estate professionals called Sharkzoo.
