Can anyone recommend a good Telecomm consultancy?

Can anyone recommend a good Telecomm consultancy? My company has about 1500 users in 22 sites throughout the US. We have an aging fleet of Nortel PBX's. My CIO and I need to quickly understand the players in both the Enterprise IP PBX and Hosted IPT solutions. Thank you! Terry

One thing you will notice very quickly is how many "Consultants" in the PBX/CPE market sell a particular vendor(s)' equipment. I can just about guarantee you that a "Consultant" that works for a company that sells products will be looking out for his company's best interest an dnot necessarily your best interest. If you can locate someone that can prepare a needs assessment, a vendor neutral RFP for pricing and can work with you to manage the project, installation and acceptance, you should benefit greatly.

I am not campaigning for the project because I primarily work for telephone companies, CLECs,etc. to help them design and build their networks. It just seems to work better when the consultant is completely arms-length from all vendors and contractors.

Terry,
There are two aspects of your search to consider. Knowledge of communications technology and knowledge of your industry. Quite a few replies are based on technology. In my opinion the major players are Avaya (Nortel), Cisco, Mitel, Shoretel, and hosted solutions. Knowlege of your industry and how you want to manage your communications network (or how others in your industry) will dictate which technology is better. As you ask questions of your consultant and vendors determine their experience with the legal industry. Also determine what applications are to be incorporated with your network. A properly designed communications network can increase profitability for your firm.

Hi,

My recommendation is Focus Consult. They provide consultancy also in US.
I had the opportunity to work between 2004-2007 with Franck Willems, while I was Project Manager for SOX Project in Orange Romania (owned by France Telecom) and I will highly recommend him for any project in telecom or IT area.
But you need to be more specific on what you are looking for.
You can contact Franck directly from Linked in and you can mention that I made this recommendation.

Regards,

Mariana

Terry, A true Consultant will not be selling products. If you are intent on hiring a consultant, there are many national firm that only do Consulting.

Consulting sales is a different animal, and if a consultant is telling you about the products he/she has to offer, they are consultive selling to you.

You will need to research consultant that provide the specific services you are looking for. Is it to build out the network itself - there are consultants that are higly skilled at developing networks. Is it to build out your telecom infrastructure, there are consultants that are subject matter experts in that area.

The Society of Telecommunications Consultants 9STC) might be a great place to start looking for an independent consultant.

Though not a consultancy, you should definitely check out XCast Labs - a hosted VoIP Provider (www.XCastLabs.com).

XCast is unique in that its Digital Voice and Video offerings are based on its own proprietary platform. Unified Communications functionality, 99.995% reliability and patented Direct-RTP technology are among the true differentiators that enable XCast to support its position as a voice and video-over-IP leader.

Up until recently, businesses looking for phone systems have had only two unattractive options. Traditional PBXes are very expensive. Key systems don't have the full feature set needed and don't scale as business grows. Times have changed!

XCast's hosted IP-PBX is almost infinitely scalable, and it's ideal for supporting workers in multiple locations or who travel frequently. The Internet seamlessly and inexpensively connects the main office with branch locations and telecommuters located anywhere around the globe. Calls between locations are free!

XCast's service integrates enhanced voicemail, faxes and email—saving employees time and enhancing productivity—and comes as a standard feature.

With the complexities of running and growing a business, no one wants a complicated system that requires a "phone guy" or a team of engineers to run it. XCast's user-friendly, web-based interface allows a Service Provider or even an end-user to deploy, configure and manage the system with very little help from us. Of course, XCast's support team will help out when needed and answer any questions. Expensive phone system maintenance contracts become a thing of the past.

My former company, Detecon, Inc. is one of the world's preeminent telecommunications consultancies. Their ability to understand the market through vendor scans and other benchmarks is unparalleled. Also, their knowledge of international markets, coupled with their ability to implement solutions without relying on a particular vendor lends them a capability that is unmatched by "managed services" that are proposed by hardware vendors.

You can contact me at jo@aufbrand.com and I can put you in touch with senior consultants at that firm.

What you want to look for is an independent consultancy that is not involved in selling any products or has partnerships with any vendor. Then I would work with a consultancy that can show you references of projects similar in scope and size rather than xx+ years of experience. I have recently done such a project on a global scale with 10k VoIP ports (Nortel). Unfortunately I can't help you with this project since I'm based in the UK but I could give you some tips.

Not sure if you are still looking for assistance but I would suggest that you and your CIO have a basic idea of what you are trying to accomplish by repelcing the systems. If your business requires just plain old telephones that is on thing if a more complexed communication system is required that is a whole different set of requirements. I would venture a guess that you and the CIO do not have an network or telecommunications operations group or they should be the organization driving the replacement project.
Some tips for determining the requirements would be establish your stragetic plan (what you need to accomplish by replacing the systems), what features you need in the system, centralized or distributed management of the systems, financials of leasing, maintenance and support.
We generally do not take these types of consulting assignments but if you send me an email I will refer you to someone we have worked with in the past.
Let me know and good luck on your search.

Hello Terry,
To help you with this project you have to provide additional information as the options you have are significant in scale.
Questions:
1: Do you have excising data connectivity to all of your 22 sites, if yes what is it?
2: Do you have an IT/Data personnel who is maintaining your infrastructure and users?
3: Do you want to have a control over your phone system as far as name assignments/usage control?
4: Does your company have or planning to have a central "datacenter" to maintain your system?

I'll be glad to share my experience with you if you are still on the market for this project.
If you want you can add me to your list.

Thank you,

Hi Terry,
In case you are still looking...
Please have a look at an open source alternative to Microsoft. eZuce can help you with your aging ip pbx, eZuce has received market validation from enterprise customers as well as partners as having the best solution architecture. There is an increasing unmet need for an IT solution that unites communications with Web enabled business processes and eZuce is the first company to provide it. Opening up the proprietary and vertically integrated solution stack means that the existing (IP) PBX vendors lose control of your UC. Suddenly they have to compete on a per component level as opposed to the all or nothing model of yesterday. This change is profound and leads to entirely different economics. It changes the vendor landscape for good; and the customer is the ultimate winner.

This article may be of some help with your situation http://bit.ly/e6Sv47

Below is our current special for all Nortel/Avaya Customers exactly in your position:
"Ring in the Savings with the eZuce Nortel /Avaya SCS Investment Protection Program"
eZuce is pleased to provide investment protection and path forward to all Avaya/Nortel SCS customers with our openUC™ enterprise edition software. Discover how eZuce openUC software can maximize your IT investments while reducing your overall communication costs as you receive:

* A one-for-one swap of Avaya/Nortel SCS licenses and Avaya PASS support contracts for eZuce openUC™ enterprise perpetual licenses and eZuce equivalent support services

eZuce provides Level 3 technical support and software maintenance on eZuce openUC™ enterprise software with Level 1 and 2 technical support delivered by certified eZuce partners. Terry,

We can assist in providing you with information as we partner with several organizations who both provide Hosted IP and Enterprise IP PBXs. We have partnered with these organizations to develop an understanding of service inventories to properly develop a migration path to either a hosted or enterprise platform for their clients. Too often we see clients migrate to a new platform by taking a "snapshot" of what they currently have and replicating that to the new system/service. When migrating to any type of IP PBX hosted service or enterprise platform you must consider your network, the type of traffic currently being utilized, centralized or decentralized service, etc. I would love the opportunity to speak with you regarding your existing situation and identify if we or one of our partners can assist you.

We can certainly assist you with this project. PCS works with Platinum Level vendors representing IP PBX suppliers: Cisco, ShoreTel, Avaya, NEC, 3 Com, and Adtrans to name the most popular. We also represent several Cloud Based Hosted IP carriers. By working with multiple vendors and carriers we are truly agnostic in our recommendations. In addition we offer a free voice and data network audit to our clients.

Our experience has shown that the voice and data carrier networks need to be assessed as well to ensure proper functionality of the IP PBX that you chose.

When do you have 15 minutes to have a brief discussion?

Nortel is a very interesting company; I believe they are finally out of business so everything you are going to be looking at is refurbished equipment. We were doing work with a very large client that Nortel was supposed to fix their system for 300k, installed something, and went into “Chapter 11”, before going out of business. If you are looking to stay in the “VoIP Arena” there is an incredible system made by “ESI” out there that is a digital phones and the capability of a VoIP system that uses very little bandwidth creating very little strain on your network, protection from elemental issues, runs much less expensive, has more features, and is easier to use. I’d be happy to tell you more about it if this is something your company would be interested in learning more about.

Terry,
What are you trying to accomplish? That is the first question that you need to answer. If you are not being asked that question, then how will you know that you have picked the proper consultant to meet your needs? I would like to throw my hat in the ring for being a consultant. We focus on performing a comprehensive audit that often results in refunds from your current carrier. By performing an audit, we then get to know your business, understand your voice/data patterns and can develop a plan going forward. We recently engineered a solution for a 40 location chain that allowed them to utilize VoIP technology and gave them the features they needed WITHOUT changing any of their equipment. They also had a mix of very old PBX's, but we came up with a solution that allowed them to maximize the useful life of their equipment. Be wary of anyone saying right off the bat that you need to scap all of your old equipment without understanding what you're trying to accomplish. By the way, we do not charge for network design or recommendations to improve your infrastructure. This is part of our auditing service. In addition, we are independent agents, so we compare the appropriate carriers for your solution and work out the best deal for you. We will not try to convince you to go with a particular carrier because we represent YOU. If you would like more information, please feel free to email or call me. Best of luck.
