Can business intelligence help make my company more green?

How can a BI system help my manufacturing comapny to "go green"? Where can I go to learn more about green BI?

In my opinion green BI is all hype. A good business intelligence decision support system should help your company reduce paper reports, but that is about as green as it gets. You can potentially reduce energy costs for servers, workstations, etc. and gain more saving.

Business Intelligence is primarily about better decision making so if you want to reduce waste and energy usage measure it, take actions and monitor results.

I agree with Danel, with one qualification. BI, like Analytics, is about producing better information and providing the user with better decision making tools. In this regard, given the right information, you could make better decisions about the return on green investments and possibly, the consequences of not going green (eg timeline for running out of fossil based resources), so in that respect, it's certainly a huge help if used properly.

I agree with both Danel and Geoffrey. I guess if you invest in a SaaS BI solution requiring less investment than traditional BI, then you could take the money saved and invest it in green initiatives.

Kirsty - just a word of caution regarding SaaS economics. Typically, the cost of a SaaS solution takes about 12-18 months to reach the cost of a perpetual licence for a similar desktop/server application. Beyond that point, SaaS becomes significantly more expensive. When we developed our forecasting/analytics software (www.praedx.com) we did a lot of analysis in this regard and ultimately chose desktop/server, with the short term intention of adding SaaS as an alternative.
