Can cloud computing be a successful replacement to a VPN?

I want to find a way to use cloud computing to to help subsidize a VPN.

The purpose of a Virtual Private Network is to securely connect otherwise separate networks together.

The cloud presents access to highly scalable resources.

The latter is more akin to a destination, and the former is more akin to a vehicle.

I'm not sure that I see any opportunities for the cloud to replace a VPN, as you can/would use a VPN to connect into a private cloud.

If, however, you move the functionality of the "destination network" into the public cloud, then you would no longer need to use the VPN to access it. If you moved it into a private cloud, then I don't really see the opportunity to get rid of the VPN.

As for the concept of "subsidizing a VPN", I cannot answer that as I don't quite get your point. It might help if you clarify with some sort of scenario-based question...

Thank you. I was asking because I have seen so many commercials referring to "cloud" computing and I really don't understand it.
