Can ERP software help businesses overcome the effects of the recession?

I read a post this morning titled, "ERP Software 'can help the world overcome financial disaster.'" Granted the use of ERP software is becoming very widespread, but is it a little bold to suggest that ERP can help us out of the financial mess we're in? Do you think ERP software can help businesses overcome the effects of the recession?

At its core, ERP enables a company to be more efficient. When implemented strategically, ERP also involves business process changes that can make an organization more innovative.

In practice, however, merely installing software will not dramatically change how a company innovates, drives new and better strategy, and so on. If dramatic innovation is a requirement for future growth, then I just don't see how any software can be the ultimate cause of changing the economy.

In addition, the economy responds to broad, macro events, while ERP involves improvements to individual organizations.

I think that it really depends on the output of the ERP System. If the system enables the company to identify inefficiencies and capitalize on those insights then yes it could help to overcome some of the effects of a recession. The ERP System, if utilized properly, can be one tool that will aide in making it through rough times, but the corporate strategy must adjust as well.
