I want to do some individual training to further my career. What is the best way to get personal career training?

Max the answer is somewhat dependent on which career you are interested in. Some training can be done on the job, but other positions demand some sort of formal training, if not a degree.

My suggestion is that you make an appointment to talk to someone who is in the field you are choosing. Ask him/her questions about what it takes to succeed in the position -- not only from an educational/training perspective, but what type of person is most likely to succeed.

In addition, it would be good for you to do some research on the field/position your are interested in. At this point, the more data you can gather, the better.

Max--I think Iris answered this very well and I want to build on her suggestion further. Some employers have coaching and mentoring programs internally and I would ask if this is available to you. If you are concerned about doing this internally, you may want to look for a personal career coach to guide your next steps. I also would suggest that you look in your industry to see if there is someone who might be willing to mentor you through your career planning. I have a collection of notes on coaching available at: http://www.evernote.com/pub/mhernandez/mhernandez_s_notebook/

Check out the difference between a mentor and a coach as one of the notes to read first. One other suggestion I have is to get a copy of a wonderful book called "First, Go With Your Strengths". This book has a great profile you can take on line and begin to collect some knowledge about your professional strengths and interests. Best Wishes to Your Success! Maria

To continue what Iris and Maria have started, three things come to mind:

Thing One - Job Shaping - the process of working with your boss to tweak, or re-shape, your job responsibilities to include more of what you like ... and less of what you don't. (More at: http://www.ggci.com/blog/archive/2005_02_01_archive.htm.)

Thing Two - Identify WHAT you want to learn, and then articulate a crisp and concise BUSINESS JUSTIFICATION for your current employer to pay for it.

Thing Three - Night School - definitely take advantage of your employers tuition reimbursement program to help you subsidize (or fully pay for) more formal education for yourself.

Hope this helps.
