Cisco, Tandberg, Polycom and "Telepresence:" Important to Your Business?

Cisco is in the process of trying to decide if it wants to acquire Tandberg, a leading provider of conferencing and "telepresence" solutions. Some Tandberg shareholders want a higher acquisition price, apparently based in part on the performance and valuation of Polycom, a larger competitor. While some say the acquisition could doom Polycom if it happens, Polycom officials have been widely reported as saying that the deal will either have no effect on Polycom or will be a boon to that company. Will these machinations have any effect on conferencing, telepresence or unified communications (UC) efforts at your company? If so, how, why and when? If not, why not?

There are a several questions and threads in this seemingly simple issue. I will try to address them in order:

Tandberg wants a higher valuation: Good for them. Typically you get one shot at this. If they think they can get more money, and can convince Cisco they're worth it, more power to 'em.

Polycom competition: I would probably agree with Polycom in regards to the effect on their business. There will be a lot of people that will use Tandberg because of the Cisco affiliation, but there will be just as many that will use Polycom because of it's lack of Cisco affiliation. I personally feel it will be a wash.

Effect on UC efforts: My customers will probably steer toward Polycom instead of Tandberg, only because Cisco typically closes the hooks on most of their acquisitions. Most companies want a "best-of-breed" solution that will allow them to pick and choose the best vendors and technologies for each piece. If the Tandberg acquisition goes through, that will be one less option for people to look at... which could prove to be a detriment to Cisco's ROI of the Tandberg purchase.
