CRM integration with ERP systems?

Our organization has a great ERP solution, and we're looking to invest in a CRM option as well. Is it possible to integrate two solutions if they're not from the same vendor? Is there a particular CRM solution that integrates best with ERP software?

That's a tough question to answer without knowing what ERP system you use. In theory, yes it is possible, but the amount of integration needed between the two is the question. Most ERP solution providers now-a-days also develop a CRM application to go along with their ERP systems.

Theoretically you should be able to integrate any ERP system with any CRM system... In theory...

It comes down to:
1) What is your requirement when you use the word 'integrate'? Push contact record info from the CRM to ERP? Or something much more...
2) What standards for data exchange does your ERP support? (I ask that since you are already married to that system. Ideally these question would have been asked when the system were in selection stage...)
3) How much $$ can you spend?
4) What are the CRM system requirements? If you try to drive selection of the CRM system based merely upon how well it (might) integrate with the ERP, you are likely headed for CRM wasteland.

Yes, most ERP companies also have a CRM system/module. Unfortunately, real world experience is typically that these solutions, while maybe - or touted to be - easier to integrate to their ERP solution - the usage and features and user acceptance is not great.

Accountants make ERP systems, and thereby lousy CRM systems.

Michael,

The answer to your first question is yes, it is possible. The answer to your second question is no. Regardless of the self promotion of many people that reply to questions on these boards there is not a "best option". There IS a best option for you. Great input by the people that previously answered as well.

I would argue that you need to answer the following questions and then proceed with your search:

1. Who is doing the integration? Your internal team, a software publisher, or a VAR?
2. What do you need for core CRM capabilities that would make you rave about your CRM solution the way you speak of your ERP implementation?
3. What ERP system are you using and what APIs are available for integration with external systems.
4. What pre-existing CRM tools that meet your CRM requirements also have pre-canned integrations that work with your ERP?
5. If you use a pre-canned integration does it have a tool set with the flexibility to be modified to suit your needs?
6. If you decide to use a VAR to write/modify the integration between your CRM and ERP selection what is their experience and which tools are they using?

Your goals are achievable.

Good Luck!
