I would hope that data security concerns are always considered valid for an organization. Business Intelligence and Analytics requires a lot of key, corporate data that could be used effectively by a company's competitors to undermine them, or gain significant advantage over them. Thus, it is important that this information be managed very, very well.
Am I saying that this information should never be put into the cloud? No. But I am saying that more than the average risk assessment should be performed to ensure that the business is not jeopardized by a mistake en route to the SaaS provider, or by a mistake during the provider's operations.
If nothing else, moving these key applications into the cloud *might* make organization's more conscious of their responsibility to maintain data securely over its entire life cycle.
My advice would just be to see if there is clear, transparent and 3rd party security verification. For example, Bime SaaS BI passed an independent security review by SalesForce.com, which has some of the highest standards in the industry, without any flaws. All Bime accounts include 128-bit SSL security – the same used by online banks. It is things like this which can ease irrational security concerns.
The issues with SaaS BI go far beyond the security domain. Ask yourself:
* Does SaaS BI reduce dependence on IT staff? Not really.
* Is all your business data already in the cloud? Probably not.
* How much will hardware cost you in the Cloud? The same as on-premises.
* Is BI backbone technology becoming more cloud-aware? Exactly the opposite.
