Degreed Payroll Positions
I have been doing Payroll and Payroll Management for well over 25 years. I am currently unemployed looking for a position and it seems endless trying to find a position that doesn't require a 4 year degree.
Can someone help me understand why this is happening and what I need to do short of going back to college to obtain. I have some college hours, but not a degree. I am enrolling in school for fall but that doesn't help me right now. I am in the Atlanta area.
Regards,
Sheryle

I've experienced what you're describing here first-hand so I know it's frustrating. You're very wise to re-enroll. My previous job was a restaurant franchise buy-out that began as very small start-up with select few associates who had 2 things in common: payroll/or tax experience, and were laid off. The business really took off. They brought on more and more clients, hired more and more staff, and eventually sold the company at profit and have now started over.
Certainly in 25 years you must have built up a great network. Ever think of going into business for yourself? Know business contacts who've recently left their positions who can provide you an 'in'? Are there any non-profits near you that you'd be interested in volunteering at while unemployed? Some of my best contacts have been made this way. To borrow a few words (paraphrased) from Seth Godin: look for places you can bring your greatest value (maybe even here on Focus!) instead of thinking of a paycheck as your main goal.(I know it's hard when we obviously need both to survive). Often it's the job we already have that keeps us from actively seeking the job of our dreams--could you be thinking too small?
Hi Sheryle,
It might be worth talking to a specialist consultant who can re-evaluate your CV for you. I often run into issues surrounding the lack of a degree despite having held senior positions in my field for over 10 years now, but I do get a decent rate of return on CVs sent to interviews given.
I took a membership in HRladders, the job site for HR jobs paying in excess of $100K US and that gave me a free CV critique as part of the process. While I didn't then pay for a CV rewrite, it gave me enough insight to restructure my own CV and that has paid off enormously in the amount of interest and response I recieve for my CV.
Sometimes we don't realise how we are selling ourselves short.
Good luck.
