I don't know if my FB page directly increases my sales, but it's a good sales tool.
I post specials & info about different products on my wall & use the photo albums to highlight many items. I get comments so people are going to the wall--that's a good start.
I've also linked the FB page to some of my other sites. Anything to become more known in my field.
As far as how many friends.......it's not the number, it's how you relate to them. By collecting friends as you would baseball cards, you'll have a huge number but they won't be beneficial if you don't get in touch w/ them. I think quality rules over quantity in this case.
I feel if you use FB as a sales tool, link it & keep in touch w/ people on it--you should eventually see some increase in business.
I hope this helps. Good luck!
Facebook pages are a strong source of motivated traffic to your website. However, you can not expect to sell anything and everything through it.
Some people spend too much time and money on design and updates and fail to engage their customers into communication. As a result, they end up with Zero sale.
We must learn from the success story of Coca Cola that managed to attract over 36 million followers.
You have to be careful, and consider, before anything, your content strategy. Remember, Facebook exists as a social network; where audiences get away from "work" issues. So therefore, your page's content must be unique, magnetic, and shareable. Remember, once someone likes you page, they rarely go back to it. Your unique message now shows up in the real time updates.
Much depends on your business model, and if you "friends" are interested in what you have to say.
Kevin...There are no studies that show that Facebook will increase your sales results or drive traffic. It is now not only necessary to compete but to build community with its user base.

Facebook can be an effective way to generate new leads, but the quality can be very uneven, in my experience.
