I agree with Drew. I'd say they increase productivity for me, especially because my job requires me to coordinate with others to get things done. I can easily ping someone to confirm an item or get an answer, facilitate/make a decision, and execute on a decision faster. If there are any issues that arise, it's much easier to troubleshoot or resolve them by having an alternate channel like Instant Messenger (IM) or chat, especially when users are working from different locations. I can communicate with a colleague or boss that is working remote or from a different part of our office. I've also used IM when I've been a client working with a vendor, as we're based in different cities and offices. The vendor is able to be more responsive to matters, and this is really important from a customer service perspective.
For software developers, I'd say they increase productivity. Developers were early adopters of the technology and have integrated it into their work practices in such a way that it has become the least distracting way to "interrupt" a developer.
In our office I have found a tremendous increase in productivity, when used properly. There is etiquette which has to be common knowledge when using a messaging medium in the office. Such as:
What communication is appropriate?
What are response expectations?
Once there are some guidelines set and an outline of what the tool is to be used for - then the office will be more responsive and productive.
