Do I need a consultant to setup my IP phone system?
My IT staff doesn't have a lot of experience with VoIP. Do you think I should hire a consultant for our implementation?

A consultant? Not really but if you are going with on premise, a good Telecom/IT company should be involved. Consultants will recommend equipment but the tech is what will make it work. Hosted is also a way to go if you want to try that route but there are many things to consider first such as bandwidth, QoS and the like. I would be happy to help.

Actually a training from a prospective vendor of your system should give your IT team members a good start. There is a few key points in whole VoIP technology such as packetization, codecs, QoS. They just need to learn how to implement this with existing network or what would be required to change in order to have trouble-free VoIP network. From my personal experience, sometimes you can build better system yourself than any consultant or third-party installer because you know what you want and you will be able to make changes when you need it without waiting until telco support will come and help you. The trade-off is that you cannot blame anybody if thigs will go wrong, relative cost of ownership could be higher because of the learning curve.

I would answer with another question.....Have you ever considered Hosted VoIP ? If bandwidth is no issue for your business and you have 50 and less employees, hosted VoIP gives you all you need off site, the only thing your IT guys need to setup is the Ethernet jack for the phone...
No downtime, no updates to manage, just a phone system that works...

A consultant no. A reputable vendor yes. If you wish to purchase the correct system for your needs you need a reputable, multi-brand vendor. Then to get the most out of that system you need that vendor again.
Your IT staff, no matter how good they are will never know all there is about that system. So a vendor and service contract is necessary. My experience is that a telephony consultant doesn't truly know the company, it's needs, or the capability of today's equipment. Instead of a truly suburb system, the consultant process muddles it down to average.
