The short answer to this question is no, you do not need to acquire separate SIP trunks with a hosted IP PBX solution. Most of the hosted IP PBX providers will package origination and termination of telephone calls into the hosted service. They also will be able to port local telephone numbers (AKA DIDs) and offer domestic long distance as well as an A to Z for international calling. Because the hosted service provider is retaining all of the core switching functionality for your service at their location, SIP trunks would connect to them - not you - as you have no interface for trunks on your premises. SIP trunks are intended to replace traditional telephone company circuits such as POTS lines or PRIs. That is not an issue if the hosted PBX is elsewhere.
I hope that helps.

The answer may depend on the solution you end up using. One thing is certain, you will need some sort of internet connection. It may be DSL, T-1, Eithernet or a SIP trunk. You will most likely have an on premise server that connects to the hosted system. Ask a lot of questions when you are comparing services and make them clarify what part of the network is their responsibility and what is yours. Your end may involve the premise server along with the local area network and handsets.
No, but you will need to number port your existing DDI numbers to the service providers network. If not you would need local (in-country) gateways. Regards Andrew
Ralph,
Buying a hosted system gives you everything with the per seat license. SIP Trunking is for premise based solutions. The total cost on a monthly basis of the Hosted VoIP solution is pretty easy to figure out from a monthly operational cost perspective - # people times monthly cost per seat (ex. 20 people x 40 per license is $800). Figure in the CAPEX cost for the phones (roughly $200 per station or 4000 if you have 20 people) and you're done...with that piece.
It gets a little more tricky when you consider what you need to do to make sure you are ready for Hosted VoIP solutions - i.e. Infrastructure and Bandwidth assessments are a MUST.
Here is an article on the subject that may help to determine if your company should even be looking at a Hosted VoIP solution I wrote earlier this week.

Good luck!
if you are using a hosted PBX, no you don't. Simple answer. Besides. All hosted PBX systems are already pre-set to configure voicemail, extension, etc.
