Do we need a payroll administration office?
Our company has grown rapidly throughout the past 5 years, and for the most part all of our HR/payroll needs have been met. Our workforce is becoming more and more global, so a couple of the executives and I were considering creating a central payroll administration office to manage all of the needs of all our employees, and serve as a one-stop shop for all payroll questions. Is this a smart move? How many other large corporations have separate payroll administration offices? Is there a better way to meet our needs?

Centralizing payroll will surely help you in optimizing. I have worked closely with some large corporates which had an internal central function but they almost never went beyond the country boundary.
An interesting option for you could be to look for an online Payroll application preferably on a SaaS model but that would depend upon how global is your workforce and if there is any one application provider which covers all the countries.
We are in the process of launching our payroll services for the Indian market and I would be interested in knowing if you would evaluate using a SaaS solution.

I have often wondered why Payroll is seen as a HR activity. Surely this aspect of handling money is best dealt with by the Finance Department. After all, they are the ones with the minds and skills for processing payments and doing sums :o)
Does the payroll function add to the effectiveness of the HR function, or is it just that when HR came on the scene, some smart guy in finance thought that HR would be a great place to put this damn headache?
You make a great point, Cormac. Payroll involves more Finance than it does Human Resources. Most Human Resources professionals are good in financial areas as a requirement these days for this exact reason.
Chintan, I definitely wouldn't be against the idea of using SaaS as a model for payroll. And I'm assuming your company offers that model. I will take a look at your site, eazework.com and give you any questions I have about the possibility of working with you guys. I'm just trying to collect as much feedback as possible right now before we make any moves.
Thanks again for your response and contributing to my questions.
