Do you find LinkedIn Groups valuable? Why or why not?
I am considering revamping a group on LinkedIn and I would welcome feedback about what makes a group relevant, engaging, and ultimately, an important resource for its members. Thanks!

I do think groups in LinkedIn are valuable, but there is way to much self promotion going on. Unless they have group moderator(s) who patrols the group, it gets annoying and frustrating to see all the solicitation going on. I've seen the new group design for linkedin groups and I have to say I'm not a fan, but I'm sure there are different layouts for groups. I'm not an owner of a group myself, but I've browsed around.
I would like to see individual sections for events per group which would include webinars, conferences, and maybe work shops. I would also like to see only post once per event. duplicate posts would be banned as well as self promotion. Sounds like a lot to ask, but it would make things much better within groups.
I have created and used some very helpful groups on Linkedin. I created a user group for a WMS application and got some great interactions among the user community. I'm a part of some industry groups as well and find the info very helpful.
Thanks for the answers - useful to hear that Arthur's experience has mirrored my own -- where the promotional content outweighs the usefulness factor. I appreciate the suggestions about making a future group better, more relevant.

I started a group a few months ago and have found it to be very rewarding. There is a high degree of interaction, humor and relationship-building. Groups are communities and what make the communities thrive are the people.
In my opinion, the key is to find several highly engaging group managers who will monitor, initiate interesting discussions and also routinely comment on others' discussions. Offering value and also interactivity are keys.
One of the best ways I've seen this happen is by having a few "human interest discussions." The most popular discussion we have is one that states - " Tell us Something Fun or Quirky about You." The responses have been hilarious and in the process you get to know a little bit about the group members. This in turn fosters people engaging with each other.
