The like button is a soft way to socially engage into someone's post, photo or link. It isn't always necessary to comment on everything. Just like in real life when someone says something and you only respond with a smile or nod.
Plus, if you only like a post then you won't receive the comment updates via email. Some of my friends will get 30 comments on one post. Sometimes, I find all those emails unnecessary.
