Do you know any good books on starting a small business?
My friend is considering opening up her own business and I'm concerned that she hasn't thought of the "big picture" yet. I'm looking for any good books that outline the challenges one faces when starting a small business. I don't want to deter her, but I also don't want to see her get in over her head and potentially lose a lot of money. Are there any good books on starting a small business? What other materials would you suggest for someone in this position?

There are a couple that I have and both had some value to me. One of them is called "The E Myth" by Michael E. Gerber and another one is called "No B.S. Business Success" by Dan Kennedy. Both authors have a few different publications as far as I know and both specialize in small business entrepreneurial advice.
I think a coach might be called for here, rather than a book. As physical and mental support is very important to a stat up. Some questions that we all should ask before going into business. Why are we doing this? How are we different from the next person who would do this? This really relates to your brand, your USP, without it there is no reason to proceed, you will just be selling on price or quantity, which will not sustain a business. How long can I sponsor myself without a income? Who will support me? Do I have a plan for now and the next phase of my business? Am I well networked? Do I have the confidence to sell? Do I know enough about the industry I am going into?
These are a starting point, and then I suggest if your friend answers these questions and still wants to continue she would do well to get a coach to support her.
Agreed with Carole's opinion. But since the question is about what book to great, I have some recommendations:
1. Straight Talk About Starting and Growing Your Business by Sanjyot P. Dunung
2. The 7 Irrefutable Rules of Small Business Growth by Steven S. Little
The 1st book contains real experience of the author from her life of starting and developing businesses. She will give you guidelines on every aspect of starting and maintaining and developing your business.
The 2nd book is presents the straight truth on small business success. It will answer many question like technology, business plans, hiring.....
I read both 2 book and was inspired a lot.
