I heard someone comment the other day about how they feel that cloud computing is diminishing the strategic importance of information technology. What are your thoughts on this? Do you agree?

I couldn't disagree more. As a solutions architect, I see cloud computing more as revolutionizing IT as opposed to diminishing its importance.
The key word here is "revolution". From an architectural perspective, we're coming full circle to the old idea of a massive centralized system serving relatively lightweight terminal access devices (you might even call these terminal devices "dumb"). Everything old is new again. Distributed computing is going out of vogue. Perhaps we'll discover that we should not have left the mainframe concept after all.
