Do you think Social Media Marketing is beating SEO?

As per my concern, now a days most people are diverting to Social Media as its the best way to increase Brand Reputation, and increase in targeted Traffic. Can you share your ideas and views about Social media?

Social media as a means of promotion only works when you reach a critical mass. I work with small business owners who want websites. They think that by having a Facebook page, a Twitter page, maybe LinkedIn and some others they will immediately drive traffic to their sites. It doesn't work that way.

Not too many people "follow" dentists, carpenters, lawyers, morticians, and retail store owners. Lots of people follow celebrities, news personalities, Hollywood stars, music icons, and so on. The average Jane or Joe with a website doesn't benefit from posting pictures of their family BBQ on their Facebook page. Social media only works for some, not all.

So we go back to SEO. I've said it before and I'll say it again: Optimize your website for search engines first and visitors second. Why? Because it's the search engines that bring visitors to your site. You can count on them. You can't count on social media.

Very well said, Bob.

Your points apply equally well in many areas of B2B such as the industrial and technology fields where I work. The social media promoters love to quote the big SM statistics and promise that no matter what your business all you have to do is have a Facebook page and a blog and Ashton Kutcher will immediately start Tweeting about you and your sales will skyrocket!

Dream on! Would be nice if it worked that way, but it doesn't.

Not beating, instead its complementing SEO.

Social media channel is indeed growing everyday helping companies to increase traffic, brand reputation and hence the name social, this channel is different from search where people search for a brand instead of listening for what their friends thinking and sharing.

In my opinion search is more targeted than social media.

I agree with Azmi that SEO and social media are complementary. Consider how Google+ posts now impact search results on Google, and the concept of the Zero Moment of Truth. Here's a terrific post exploring the impact of this relationship on B2B marketing: http://searchengineland.com/the-future-of-b2b-search-start-preparing-for-soci...

We have a tendency to want to simplify things. It's natural, but it doesn't work in marketing. One channel, like social, starts to show promise and we move there, create a facebook page, start tweeting & pinning and think its the only thing we need to do in order to boost sales. I wish it were that simple! The truth is, like Azmi & Stephanie point out, channels like social are just a new patch in the quilt - we need all of the pieces to compliment each other in order to truly be successful (and warm!). Instead, think of using what you learn from SEO like what keywords people are searching for, what pages/messages convert the best and use that insight to help drive the content you produce (right down to how you title a PDF, post or tweet) and share that on social sites, your website and blog. This will do two things, spark conversation w/your audience bc you've targeted your content AND boost your organic ranking for the terms people who need your product/service are already searching for!

Having an integrated SEO, content and social strategy is harder than just having one of those things...but, it's also better.
