Do you use Facebook for your advertisements?

Is Facebook a cheap way to advertise? Why would you recommend Facebook to place ads? Would you recommend it over other social media sites?

Yes. Facebook ads are still a fairly cheap way to get your message in front of a select audience. Since Facebook has so much information on its users it makes it easier / and cheaper to get your ads in front of your target audience wether it be 45 year old females in the midwest or 18-24 year old males in san francisco

Facebook is a cheap way to reach out to the mainstream audience - which you can segment significantly well to match your demographics (age, gender, location) as well as keyword interests (gamer, project manager, hobbyist).

The only problem with Facebook visitors is that they are more impatient (what do you expect, they are social networking in the background.) Also visitors are looking more for their self-interests so any message that dangles a "freebie" gets more airtime. The challenge is to convert that freebie message into a meaningful lead for you.

Facebook also gives a simple way to test your social messaging before you launch a full-fledged campaign. If your message is designed for a particular group, then perhaps a social networking site geared towards that demographic works better.

Yes, Facebook is indeed THE place to advertise. 500 Million users... say no more..
Actually it's getting more and more important to Market on Facebook.
And it's easier.. if your friends will "like" the product/Service you share with them...it will appear on their news-feed as well, and for their friends to like, and so on...
A recent Slogan that I have seen on Facebook next to a pre-owned sale, was "would You rather buy from someone you know?!" and its only one of many but it works.
I copied the statistic from Facebook itself... it's interesting facts check it out
http://www.facebook.com/press/info.php?statistics
" * More than 500 million active users
* 50% of our active users log on to Facebook in any given day
* Average user has 130 friends
* People spend over 700 billion minutes per month on Facebook "

Now, do we understand the potential? ;)

I've actually had good success running ad-words type of campaigns on Facebook, I really had success targeting specific demographics and had a much higher conversion rating with Facebook than with Google for the same type of adwords campaign.

I've also had decent success utilizing the "free" portion of Facebook by creating a business page and then using that to advertise and give special deals to my friends/fans. The more they heard about the special deals, the more they would share it with their friends, etc. . .

The key is to keep up with it!

I like to follow the 12:1 rule suggested by Chris Brogan. I will do 12 posts of a relationship building nature before I do one of a sales/advertising nature. Else my audience will get frustrated and leave. Having said that, if I happen to have a "barn burning" sale go on, I will let my audience know about it.
