Do you use online back up services?
I've always backed up my office computers with external hard drives, but its getting a bit overwhelming. What do you think about using an online backup service like Mozy or Carbonite? Are they worth the money? Is it easy to restore from these backup providers?

As a SMB technology consultant I do recommend online backup services for some clients. For anyone that is on the road, I think an online backup solution is a very smart choice. The user can be connected to any network, and their computer will automatically back up all the changes (assuming the service is set up in this manner). This also eliminates the need to have to carry around a small external hard drive.
Most of my clients back up their office computers to an in-office server. I also like to recommend to have that server back up to a cloud solution just in case, but not all choose to go that route.
Backup to external harddrives is both reliable and fast. It is however, not secure (if you have a fire, your on-site backup does you no good). Carbonite/mozy/dropbox are all great options, not much more expensive than buying a new HDD every year, and solve your off-site backup needs.
I have just experienced both Carbonite and Mozy, and blogged about those experiences at http://dortchonsaas.blogspot.com/2010/06/cloud-based-backup-in-real-life-my.html. I've so far come down on the side of Mozy, but am exploring alternatives such as JungleDisk and BackBlaze. I'll share more about my experiences here, and encourage all who read this to do the same. Let's make our information safer and back-up vendors better!
