Do you use social media at work for business or pleasure?
A recent study from Trend Micro reveals that the majority of workers around the world are going on social media sites while at work. Is this due to the rise in social media marketing? Or is it just workers wasting time? What do you think? Is there any grey area between working on social media and socializing on social media?

Both. I use Twitter to stay abreast of what's happening in my industry from a news and events perspective and Focus to get educated on the pressing issues I'm facing at work. I do visit Facebook while at work for personal reasons, but limit myself to one casual visit a day that can only be a few minutes long.
I work in social media, so I use FB, Twitter, etc., in order to cross-syndicate content, contests, and promote brand awareness. I hardly ever use them for social reasons anymore.
Allen,
For me, the answer is both -- same as it is for email or IM.
To some extent, things rarely fall cleanly into one bucket or the other, so there is always a little cross over. The key is to address any time-sensitive interaction expediently, and defer the those interactions which can be deferred.
All too often, however, a social interaction leads to a business benefit, or a business interaction branches into the personal. Not always, but often.
That's part of being social. :)

I use twitter, focus.com, and linkedin for business. And I use it throughout the workday.
Facebook, I reserve only for my personal social media and try not to touch it during the day.
This may sound crazy bc I use twitter so much, but I am not set up on Twitter to support my personal interests and basically can't use it for personal. Do i waste time on social media? Yes, but only because it can be inefficient. It is not because I am doing anything personal there.
From a corporate perspective, if you ban people from facebook, they would be on Perez Hilton or espn.com anyway.
