Does anyone have a good job description for a Chief of Staff?
I'm looking for a job description for a Chief of Staff (or some related position) who would become the right-hand (wo)man for a COO/President of a mid-sized public company. Does anyone have one they are willing to share?

Hi Charlie, in order to find the right candidate I recommended writing one from scratch as opposed to copying one that is out there. This should include:
A little about the company, some inciting benefits, details about corporate culture, etc.
Position location and whether company is willing to cover relocation expenses. If in a big city try to be more specific, such as whether it is on the north side, etc.
Personality type you are looking for
What the daily duties this candidate will have in this role are
The experience and requirements necessary to be considered
That should start you off with a basic template. Good luck.
This is a squishy one, I think. A description is likely to vary phenomenally, based on a number of factors, and could change over time for the same COO in the same organization. Therefore, the "from scratch" option seems right. Not least, it forces the COO to really think through the "why" as well as the "what" of the position.
The job might be a simple as being a high-grade PA. Or, it might require a near-superstar to cover the gaps in the COO's experience and/operating preferences. It might be the dumping ground for managing meetings and schedules, along with decision-taking responsibility for defined issues. It could be the "bad cop" to the COO's "good cop".
And so on . . .
Charlie,
There are many Chief of Staff job postings across the internet job boards containing descriptions that can be refined to match your need. You may need to exclude "medical" in the search, since CoS is a very popular title in that field.
