Does anyone have some good advice about how you can create e-books?
I am looking to (and then sell) e-books and have found a lot of conflicting advice (from mainly suppliers!). I have also found reference to 'page turning e-book software' which looks great but ranges from free to very expensive.
I want to present a professional image with some functionality (our competitors do little or nothing so I don't need anything fancy) but do want to sell it (possible with a preview ability) through our website.
Any thoughts, advice or links to relevant blogs will be greatly received.

I've found page turning software to be completely unusable on the web. Lot of zooming and scrolling just to read a page.
I use simple PDF documents converted from MS Word for my ebooks at http://photographers-seo.com and http://photoblogseo.com which are structured just like every ebook I have seen and downloaded on the web. In the PDF you can add bookmarks, table of contents, etc. PDF also allows for iPad us if that is important to you.
Copyblogger has a good article about writing an ebook that sells: http://www.copyblogger.com/write-and-sell-ebook/ which links to an ebook (appropriate) about how to launch the heck out of your ebook: http://www.howtosellyourebook.com/
Lastly, there are tons of self publishing platforms like http://www.lulu.com.
I think the answer really depends on what your topic and audience are. PDF format may be a good option, but epub might be an even better idea given it's flexibility for devices. If you are interested in something more web-based that the audience does not need to have a device for, smartphone or reader then there are lots of page-turner products out there. You're right some are free (for a reason) and some are terribly expensive. I would take a look at what you think your readers will be most comfortable with and plan from there. If you are interested in seeing some different products feel free to drop me a line. My group has some of this software and ability to create many of the formats I've described. Best of luck in your search!
