i would never ask someone to retweet my work but i have no qualms about tweeting it myself. i don't like it when people ask me to retweet and i usually won't unless it's a really worthy cause (like a job, or a charity) and not terribly self-promoting.

I think it's bad form and I ignore most requests like this, and in some cases, I've unfollowed people who do this habitually. The exception I make is when a respected friend or colleague makes the request because of a community cause they're involved with or a position they're trying to fill. Operative phrase: respected friend or colleague.

I both retweet other posts and add PLS RT to mine; when I really want it RTed. It does work (i.e. they do get retweeted).

The problem, I find, is that many create 140 characters and if I want to retweet it, that's too many characters. So I tell my clients to shoot for 100 characters so that others can add a bit to it before retweeting.

If the content is really good (text + link) and you've built some credibility on Twitter, the RT will naturally happen. If someone occasionally asks for help in RT about a conference, webinar or something really important, I'll do it.

Retweets aren't a stand-alone event on Twitter; they are usually part of a larger connection between two people. That's why you'll see some people retweeting the same people regularly, and conversations happening between them on a regular basis.

It's not really about asking or not asking, but more about the relationships you've formed and the efforts you make to retweet and help promote others.
