Does a benefits status event ever include changes beyond a spouse and children?
If my mother comes and lives with us and is declared as a dependent, can she be covered under my health insurance and is she considered a "status event" so we can update our health insurance? I realize that our insurance coverage may not cover her (but I think it does), but changing it now when our open enrollment has ended is key in our decision making.

In my experience, no family members beyond spouse, children, registered domestic partner, and possibly the registered domestic partner's children are ever covered by an employer's insurance. Your mother moving to live with you is not a "status event" typically covered. Have you spoken to your Benefits/HR Dept? If you want to take your question farther, call your insurance company and see if dependent parents are eligible for coverage. Open enrollment or not, it would be a first for me to hear of parents being accepted into an employee's insurance plan. Since it sounds like you are time constrained, start asking questions immediately!
