Does a company that uses SIP trunking need to purchase additional Internet connectivity bandwidth?

It depends what bandwidth you already have, what it's used for, and how congested it gets. If you're running close to the wire on bandwidth then yes, of course you'll need more. You need to calculate what bandwidth the SIP trunking will require (maximum), apply admission control to police it, and then make sure that you *always* have that amount of bandwidth available for voice - including overheads.

You can achieve that with proper queuing and policing on your internet-facing routers, remembering that it needs to be done outgoing (by your routers) and incoming (by your provider's routers).

The alternative is to buy a higher class of service for your voice traffic, if your provider offers multiple classes. Certainly on MPLS, you're likely to be offered expensive classes for high-priority traffic which is intolerant to delay, jitter and packet loss - ie: voice. If you bundle your voice traffic in with your other traffic without adequate protection then you'll get quality issues.

Video, conversely, is often not considered important enough to fork out for the higher quality.

It all depends then on how much the quality matters to you. But remember, without protection quality issues will occur and will occur randomly, for all users. Including those higher-up the organisation, and including important calls with customers.

Probably not if you're just doing voice and low-bandwidth data applications. However, if you move upstream to using a lot of video or large file transfers (such as medical images or sound files), you'll likely need more bandwith. This is true, not just to support these new needs, but to ensure you don't compromise voice quality.

I agree with my brethren. It all depends on the total bandwidth needs of your company. Some dedicate bandwidth specifically for SIP usage where it makes sense. Some carriers can provide prioritized Class of Service when you bundle your voice with data to allow for toll quality voice experience.

Additionally, it is worth checking to see if your PBX has authorized your carrier for SIP service. Sometimes interoperability can be an issue best dealt with in advance.

Definitely maybe. If you have existing bandwidth and you are going to bring in SIP, it depends on amount of bandwidth you have available, the quantity and compression of the trunks and how much margin of safety or other usage you want to maintain.

If you are getting transport and trunks from a single source carrier, your carrier agent or representative should be able to develop a solution that give you adequate bandwith for your needs.
